Gibson City First Christian Church
Disciples of Christ
Roots
The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) began in the early 1800's in the United States. The founders did not intend to start another denomination: rather they were working with and encouraging Christians of several different denominations to join together as one Church modeled on the Christian faith communities of the New Testament.
Although the vision of the founders did not become our current reality, the Disciples of Christ are committed to ecumenical relations with other Christians and working together in mission and ministry with many of our sisters and brothers in Christ from other denominations.
Traditions and Practices
Disciples of Christ congregations are all unique! We stress freedom, rejoice in our diversity, and each congregation is a self-governing unit and calls its own pastor.
Traditions and practices associated with Disciples of Christ congregations include the following.
Open Communion The Lord's Supper is celebrated every week and is the highlight and focal point of our worship service. All believers, regardless of denomination, are welcome to partake. At First Christian, Gibson City, everyone is invited to share in the meal of Christ, whether you have known him a short time, a long time, or you'd like to get to know him!
Freedom of Opinion Each person is free to explore and interpret the Scriptures according to one's reason and experiences and free to determine individual belief guided by the Scriptures, the Holy Sprit, study and prayer.
Baptism by Immersion Disciples practice baptism by immersion (mirroring the New Testament practice ). Individuals are baptized when they are able to express a personal desire to become a part of the Body of Christ for themselves. Most Disciples also recognize other forms of baptism. A person baptized in another Christian tradition wishing to join a Disciples congregation will not have to be baptized by immersion when transferring his or her church membership.
Infant Dedications Because Disciples are not baptized until they are of an age to express their personal desire to follow Jesus Christ, many people ask, "how do you welcome infants and small children into your church family?" Disciples practice the celebration of Baby Dedications. A baby or child and his or her parents / family are presented to the congregation. The congregation promises to love, nurture, and be a Christian example for the baby and family.
The Ministry of all Believers Disciples live and encourage the New Testament understanding that all who follow Jesus Christ, clergy and laity, are called to ministry in Christ's name. Minister an lay person lead worship, organize and direct ministry opportunities, and nurture spiritual growth.
